Phonics
Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them learn to read. Phonics is taught everyday (9.05-9.30 Mon-Thurs) and 9.35-10.00 on Friday in 25 minute sessions. Therefore it is vital that your child is ready to start the school day by 8.55 so they do not miss this important lesson of the day. During their time in Reception, the children will be taught three phases of phonics (phases 2-4).
The sounds the children will be learning each week will can be found on the parent noticeboard in the classroom. Each half term the children will be learning a new phase of the phonics scheme 'Letters and Sounds' which are as follows:
Phase 2
Set 1 - s a t p
Set 2 - i n m d
Set 3 - g o c k
Set 4 - ck e u r
Set 5 - h b f ff l ll s ss
Phase 3
Set 6 - j v w x
Set 7 - y z zz qu
Consonant digraphs - ch sh th ng
Vowel digraphs (and trigraphs) ai ee igh oa oo ar or ur ow oi ear air ure er
Phase 4
The main challenge in this phase is to help children to blend and segment words with adjacent consonants e.g. truck, help.
