India 2020

India – 24th January – 2nd February

What is happening next week?

St Laurence is sending Mrs Barto-Smith to work in Kolkata with the Cathedral Relief Service. She will be working in a school called Brace Bridge which is actually between two working railway lines! It doesn’t have any walls but it does have a roof. Mrs Barto-Smith will be teaching classes as well as providing training for some of the Indian teachers.

Why are St Laurence sending a teacher to India?

We are taking part in this project for a number of reasons – we want to link our children up with other children in a different part of the world so that, as a school, we can develop a better understanding of others – celebrating what makes us different and what similarities bind us together. We want to show the children that our wider community is made up of people from all different cultures and backgrounds and by being part of this project we will better understand the culture of others. This project will provide the children with engaging and inspiring opportunities to learn about the lives of others.

As part of our Christian vision we want to support those less fortunate than ourselves. Jesus calls us to treat others as we would like to be treated and to love our neighbours. Supporting this project sees us acting on our deep held Christian beliefs here at St. Laurence.

This is the start of a relationship that we hope will last many years.

Please keep checking back to this page as Mrs Barto-Smith is hoping to post photos and comments while she is out in India. Also, she will endeavour to answer the questions that the children asked during our India day in November.
