Summer 1
t
At the start of this term in EYFS, our learning will be inspired by the story Handa’s Surprise. Through this engaging text, the children will explore the continent of Africa, developing their understanding of different cultures and environments around the world.
We will learn about the climate in Africa and compare it to the weather in the UK. The children will enjoy discovering a range of African animals and talking about where they live, what they eat, and how they are different from animals we might see in our local area.
As part of our seasonal learning, we will continue to observe the signs of Spring. The children will continue to identify changes in the environment, such as blooming flowers and longer days, and learning to recognise common birds found in the UK.

In the second half of this term, our children will be exploring a range of exciting topics through stories, creativity, and hands-on learning.
📖 Literacy
We will be reading The Gruffalo and using the story to inspire our imagination, storytelling, and early writing skills. The children will also have the opportunity to design and describe their own scary creature!
🦖 Understanding the World – Dinosaurs
Our dinosaur topic will involve lots of discovery and discussion. Children will:
- Learn about different types of dinosaurs
- Find out what dinosaurs ate and how they survived
- Sort dinosaurs into carnivores and herbivores
- Explore similarities and differences between species
🐞 Exploring Nature – Minibeasts
In our outdoor area, we will be observing and identifying minibeasts in their natural habitats. Children will:
- Look closely at a variety of minibeasts
- Talk about where they live and why
- Create their own minibeast habitats using natural materials
🎨 Expressive Arts & Design
Creativity will be encouraged throughout all areas of learning, especially as children design their own creatures and build habitats.
