Phonics is taught every day in reception. Phonics is the link between letters and the sounds they make. Using the ‘Letters and Sounds’ Scheme we plan and teach Phase 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Once the children have begun to learn the sounds, they can use this knowledge to read, blend and spell words. Within phonics there are ‘tricky words’ that children will need to remember by sight as they cannot be sounded out using phonics. We will send home relevant word bookmarks that children can use to practise their phase two and three tricky words over the year.
We will share with parents which sounds (phonemes) and tricky words we are learning throughout the term on a weekly basis. Throughout the year we organise parent workshops on phonics to help parents/carers support their child’s reading and writing at home.
